Have you ever wondered how ants survive rain? The answer is by using their defensive system. Ants are tiny living beings which are constantly subject to outside threats such as predators, shoe, poison and so many other factors. 

Out of all these rains is the biggest challenge they have to face. However, you would have not seen any ant’s colony being swept away from rain simply because these have defense systems to safeguard them from rain. Among the defense systems the ants have, it will be the anthill who will sit right on top of the nest. Further they make mounds with a special kind of dirt and sand which are quite effective for water absorption and withering. Usually when the water hits the convex , dirt beds run away from the side.

Besides that, there are colonies of mangrove ants where they employ a soldier ant to plug the entrance with its head. They make sure that rain is not reaching the entrance. However, it is only on a temporary basis since it will halt the proper gas circulation with the surrounding area.

The tight nature of the raft provides the required power to float. They could stay alive in the raft for a number of weeks or even until the inundated flood water reduces and until they can form a colony in a new place in the underground.

Once the temperature decreases the body temperature of the ants reduces at a drastic rate and consequently their movements become sluggish too. In this circumstance, ants tend to look for warmer places. Ants overwinter in clusters.  To do that , ants usually hunker down in clusters so that they can maintain their body temperature.

Usually, the worker ants build the ant mounds. They usually remove the ground soil underneath which they  come across in the tunneling process and during the chamber construction. Next they pile up that soil on the ground and consequently form mounds.

The mounds are accountable for three major purposes of the colony. 

  • They will be the entrances to the nest. 
  • Besides it is crucial to control the internal temperature and 
  • in defending the colony from predators or from other threatening intruders which could be troublesome for the nest. 

Ants mounds are made of soil particles, or may be with some of the plant materials also.

Large ant mounds are not made by all the types of ants. As there could be some ants which could build small ant craters. 

You could spot them mainly on the concrete gaps, asphalt slabs etc. Ants species such as harvester ants, pyramid ants, Argentine ants tend to form mounds. Whenever you spot any colony, it is an indication to identify that there is an ant colony present. When there is a mound, there is a chance of getting the passerby  bitten and stung. Besides that, there will be damages to the landscape grasses and for ground covers as well. It will make the entire landscape aesthetically less beautiful.
